The plum is a fruit. There are over 40 species of plum. The most known ones are Prunus domestica and Prunus salicina. Dried plums are called prunes. Fresh and dried plums has fiber and other chemicals that might help with constipation.


 Dried plum also contains chemicals that seem to subside bone loss and improve joint health. People use dried plums for constipation, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses. Don’t confuse plum with Japanese Apricot. These are not the same.


Intake of plums is associated with improved cognition, bone health, and heart function. They also have a low glycemic index, so eating them is unlikely to cause spikes in your blood sugar levels.



The advantages of eating plums are:

 1:Helps in Diabetes Treatment

The various bioactive compounds in plums are at play here. These are sorbitol, quinic acid, chlorogenic acids, vitamin K1, copper, potassium, and boron. These nutrients work synergistically and help cut the risk of diabetes.Plums also increase serum levels of adiponectin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The fiber in plums can also help – it slows down the rate at which your body absorbs carbs.

2:Reduces the risk of  Cancer

In other lab tests, plum extracts managed to kill even the most aggressive forms of breast cancer cells. More interestingly, the normal healthy cells remained unaffected (10). This effect was linked to two compounds in plums – the chlorogenic and neochlorogenic acids. Though these acids are quite common in fruits, plums seem to contain them in surprisingly high levels.


3:Reduces blood pressure

A small 2017 research found that people with high blood pressure who ate three grams of plum extract each day for three months had significantly lower blood pressure, compared with people who were given a placebo.This is because the potassium in plums  may help control your blood pressure in two ways:

  1. Potassium can relax the tension in your blood vessel walls, which leads to lower blood pressure.
  2. Potassium can help your body get rid of sodium through your pee. This is important because high sodium levels trigger your body to hold onto more water, which can drive up blood pressure.

4:Aids healthiness of the bone

Plums contain many vitamins and minerals that contribute to bone health , including potassium, magnesium, and vitamin K, Gellman says. However, dried plums have more concentrated levels of these particular nutrients, compared to fresh plums. So maybe stick to prunes if you’re looking to reap this benefit. “These nutrients help to reduce the loss of bone minerals and actively support bone structure,” says Gellman. This is especially important as you grow older, when weakened bones can lead to fractures, even from small injuries.

5:Reduces constipation

Plums and prunes are popular remedies for constipation for two main reasons:

  1. They’re high in fiber, which helps to bulk up stool and allow you to pass stool more easily. A cup of prunes, for example, contains 12.4 grams of fiber (roughly 50% RDI).
  2. Plums contain sorbitol, a type of sugar alcohol that acts as a laxative.


     6:Averts/Prevents Osteoporosis

    Consumption of dried plums exerts anabolic and anti-resorptive actions, which may aid in maintaining healthy bones. Polyphenols, along with the potassium content present in dried plums, can encourage the bones’ formation, may improve bone density, and can also prevent bone loss.

    7: Aids Digestion

    They can be a good source of dietary fibers that can help in regulating the digestive system. According to a research study published in the Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Journal, dried plums or prunes can be more effective in treating gastrointestinal disorders such as constipation compared to other remedies such as psyllium husk.
